Gofire Review

I’m the kind of person who likes to have not only a Plan A, but also a Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D. Depending on the situation, I might want even more plans than that. It just depends.

Gofire All Purpose Fire Starters

One of my biggest concerns with going out on an overnight solo was a pretty common one: “What if I can’t get a fire lit?” Combine that with the fear of all of the wood being wet, my lighter (and backup lighter, and my backup lighter’s backup lighter) not working, and the worry of having no cool fire photos to share to my social media account, yeah, it’s a big stressful mess for me.

Derek found this company called Gofire to assist me in my anxiety. They’re sold online and at Walmart, so they aren’t a deeply held secret, but we had just never used them. We started simple; light one in the driveway and see how long it lasts. The bag boasts a 10 minute burn time and we found that to be spot on. You don’t open the packets, just light it and watch it burn. They’re non toxic and made from Parafin wax and a Polyethylene terephthalate wrapper. No trash is one of my favorite perks. Apparently, they are even safe to use indoors.

Now, this feels like cheating. Part of the thrill of soloing or spending time in the woods is definitely roughing it and testing your mind and body for limits. I want to be clear, these little pouches do not build a fire for you. I still spent time building a fire and breaking down wood for this purpose. This time, I went with a log cabin fire shape, with parallel pieces creating rectangles on top of themselves. I also put a bunch of small stuff in the middle and after the fire began, I put the wet stuff on top to dry. It was beautiful. The Gofire pouches made it easier to get it started without spending too much time on tinder and kindling. Instead, my efforts were reserved for chopping wood and stacking things purposefully.

In conclusion, I’ll be packing a few of these for all of my trips. The peace of mind alone was worth it. They take up no space at all in my pack too. Fire is kind of important, I will kind of cheat to achieve it every single time.

Here’s the proof! Filmed towards the end of my night.
